Michael chooses and thrives at Georgetown University
Choosing and applying to University was a full-time, very serious undertaking for Michael. He rationalized all the pros and cons – each chosen university’s quality of education and lifestyle, geographical location, extra-curricular options, specialty programs – and while he was focused on International Affairs and Politics he also wanted a campus which offered extra-curricular and athletic opportunities. At times, he was torn between wanting a rural campus versus an urban one in the thick of a large and bustling city. His choices were narrowed down to five with Georgetown University in Washington, DC as his first and top choice – he loved the academic opportunities and the vibrancy of Washington. It was one of the first universities he had visited, even before the usual pre-graduation research phase. Michael was smitten at first sight and couldn’t wait to partake in Georgetown’s Internship opportunities and cheer on the Georgetown basketball team.
Others in contention ranged from Middlebury, Duke and Tufts through Ivy-League choices such as Princeton and Harvard. And, when it came to decision time, Michael found himself in a dilemma. He was accepted by all but Princeton which put him on a wait-list. One of his toughest decisions was to say “no” to Harvard – after all, who says no to one of most revered educational institutions and key affiliations on a resume? Michael did.
And, while some questioned his decision, he was totally comfortable with his choice – he thrived at Georgetown and partook of all that Washington had to offer – its cultural institutions, bike and nature paths, sports facilities and more. In College, his successes were many, including membership on the Dean’s List and an Advanced Certificate in European Studies. He was a member of Pi Delta Phi (National French Honor Society) and Phi Alpha Theta (National History Honor Society) and served on Georgetown University’s Lecture Fund for four years becoming Chair in his final year. At every opportunity, he thrived on political debate and the diversity of campus life.
A keen tennis player, Michael was one of the founding members of the Georgetown University Club Tennis team in his freshman year and participated in many USTA tournaments through Senior Year. In his Junior Year, Michael opted for a Study Abroad Spring Term in Lyon, France – one of the major highlights of his Georgetown experience. Not only did he benefit from the academics and opportunity to live in a different culture, he also perfected his French, used every spare minute to travel throughout Europe and even got down to South Africa. He got turned on to jogging and even though he indulged in French food and wine, he returned home in better shape and weight than before!
Michael is remembered by his friends for “bleeding Hoya blue”, making the trek to Atlanta in Senior year to cheer on the Georgetown Hoyas at the Final Four and spending countless good times at The Tombs.
